“I don’t like the green thiiiiings,” she said as her three year old body melted off her chair to the floor.
I exhaled. It was the end of a long day and I wasn’t in the mood for a sad performance from, “Picky Eater and the Green Things”.
“Sweetheart, c’mon, you like chili. You don’t have to eat it but I’m not making anything else for dinner. So, it’s your choice.” I lifted the toy basket, trudged down the hall and lowered to hands and knees to pick up the mess.
“Moooom!” she yelled and I could hear her get up from the table to find me.
Still kneeling, my heart lowered to match my posture and I whispered a desperate prayer for patience.
“Mom,” she reached me and put her hand on my shoulder, “I prayed that God would take out the green things.”
My eyes widened and laughter tripped over my lips, “Oh! You did? …What did He say?”
She answered with her hips, swinging them in a clever swag back to the dining room table. I supposed she had figured out that when I refuse her she can go above my head and ask God Himself.
She returned minutes later. “Mom,” she said eyebrows lifted. I could tell by her tone this was going to be good.
“Yes sweetheart,” I said and squared my shoulders with hers.
“I like the green things,” she exclaimed.
“Ahh…is that how God answered your prayer?”
She nodded, licked her lips and jogged back to her bowl of green-thing-chili.
Thanking God for the plot twist, I hoisted the basket to my relieved hips. What would have otherwise fell into a tired tantrum transmuted into a living sermon to remind…
In hope, my little one had asked our Lord to take out the green things
but when He didn’t…
…in faith, she took a bite instead.
His answer came to her more delicious than expected.
But she never would have known if she waited for her own desired outcome.
Oh patient God, transform the picky-eater inside of me…
turn me from picky persistence to grateful acceptance.
Give me courage to taste and see that You are good in the midst of every season
…even the seasons full of green things.
